Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) is a broad category of conditions causing painful, difficult urination in cats. Stress is a major driver in many cats, making environmental management as important as medical treatment.
FLUTD causes acute, significant welfare harm. Cats with cystitis experience urinary urgency, dysuria (painful urination), and abdominal discomfort that disrupts normal activity and causes visible distress. Urethral obstruction is a veterinary emergency causing bladder distension, acute pain, and systemic toxicity from urine retention — without treatment it is fatal within 24 to 48 hours. The strong role of stress in feline idiopathic cystitis means that welfare-relevant environmental factors — multi-cat conflict, inadequate litter box provision, lack of hiding spaces, and owner absence — directly contribute to painful urinary episodes. Conversely, environmental enrichment and stress reduction are genuine, evidence-based therapeutic interventions. Recurrence is common without addressing the underlying stress drivers.
