American bison were reduced from 30 million to fewer than 1,000 individuals by the 1880s. Their restoration through conservation breeding and reintroduction is a major success, but bison in restored populations face welfare challenges from fencing, translocation, and population management.
Bison restoration represents a profound welfare success story at the population level — the recovery of a species from functional extinction provides welfare gains to hundreds of thousands of animals that would not otherwise exist. However, individual welfare considerations apply throughout the management process. Capture for translocation causes acute stress — bison are flighty, high-strung animals that respond intensely to handling. Confinement in fenced conservation areas, while necessary for management, prevents the extensive seasonal migrations that characterise wild bison behaviour. Population management interventions including contraception and selective culling affect individual welfare. Commercial bison herds, which make up the majority of the restored population, operate under livestock production conditions with variable welfare standards.
