Each remaining vaquita individual carries extraordinary welfare and conservation significance. Gillnet entanglement causes drowning — air-breathing marine mammals caught underwater experience panic, hypoxia, and prolonged distress before losing consciousness. With so few animals remaining, each entanglement death is irreplaceable. The failed 2017 captive rescue demonstrated that vaquitas experience extreme capture stress — the individual that died showed cardiac arrhythmias and acute trauma responses. Wild vaquitas now live in a sea increasingly crowded with illegal fishing activity, creating chronic disturbance and mortality risk in their entire remaining range. Their situation is a case study in how human economic incentives can override conservation and welfare concerns.
