Sea lice treatment has become one of the most significant acute welfare events in salmon farming. Thermal delousing — passing fish through 34°C water — reliably kills lice but causes measurable physical damage to salmon: corneal scarring, scale loss, and skin burns that take weeks to heal. Fish show prolonged elevated cortisol after thermal treatment. Hydrolicer jets cause scale loss and surface injury. Chemical bath treatments expose entire cage populations to pesticide-level stress; miscalculations cause mass mortality. The frequency of treatment — up to several times per year — means salmon face repeated acute welfare insults throughout their production cycle. The fundamental driver is overcrowded, open net-pen conditions that make lice control perpetually necessary.
