Advances in animal neuroscience provide increasingly detailed understanding of pain and suffering in species previously assumed to lack these capacities.
Advances in animal neuroscience are progressively expanding the recognized circle of beings with morally relevant welfare experiences. Species once assumed to lack pain capacity are shown to have functional pain pathways and behavioral pain responses. This growing scientific understanding should inform welfare standards and personal choices about how we treat a wider range of animal species.
