Laboratory animal welfare sits at a genuine ethical tension: research animals may suffer to generate knowledge that prevents human and animal suffering. The welfare imperative is to minimize that suffering to the lowest level compatible with scientific validity. Refinement improvements — analgesics for painful procedures, enriched housing reducing stress, positive reinforcement training reducing handling distress — often simultaneously improve welfare and research reproducibility. Chronic pain and distress in research animals is a known confound affecting biological outcomes; addressing it benefits both the animals and the science. The gap between available refinements and actual implementation is large, driven by resource constraints, researcher attitudes, and inadequate oversight.
