Antibiotic use in fish farming contributes to antimicrobial resistance, but it also reflects underlying welfare problems in aquaculture systems that drive disease in the first place.
High antibiotic use in aquaculture is simultaneously a welfare indicator and a welfare driver. Disease outbreaks that prompt antibiotic treatment are symptoms of overcrowded, stressful farming conditions that compromise fish immune function. Fish suffering from bacterial infections, fin rot, and ulcers experience significant distress, particularly given emerging evidence for fish sentience and pain experience. Antibiotic treatment, while reducing mortality, does not address the underlying stressors. Farms that invest in reduced stocking densities, better water quality, and vaccination programs achieve better welfare outcomes and lower antibiotic use simultaneously — demonstrating that welfare improvement and disease control are complementary rather than competing goals.
