Abalone farming has expanded rapidly in response to declining wild populations. As with other invertebrates, questions about abalone sentience and welfare deserve consideration given the scale of production.
Abalone occupy a similar uncertain position to other invertebrates in welfare science. Their nervous systems are simpler than crustaceans, and most welfare scientists consider their capacity for pain to be low or absent, though the question is not fully resolved. Disease outbreaks in abalone farms — particularly withering syndrome — cause prolonged deterioration that would constitute severe suffering if abalone are sentient. Handling practices during intensive production represent another uncertainty. The most proportionate response is to support continued research into gastropod sentience while applying basic precautionary care in farming operations. Abalone farming does offer conservation benefits by reducing pressure on wild populations, which is a countervailing consideration.
