Sea lice infestations are one of the most serious welfare and production problems in Atlantic salmon farming. Understanding this issue reveals the intersection of fish welfare and aquaculture sustainability.
Sea lice infestation causes significant suffering for farmed salmon. Lice feeding on skin and gill tissue creates open wounds that are painful, serve as entry points for secondary infection, and impair the fish's ability to regulate body fluids. Severe infestations can remove the skin from around the head, exposing underlying tissue. The treatments used to control lice carry their own welfare costs: chemical baths stress fish and damage gill tissue; mechanical bathing with hot water or freshwater causes scale loss and physical trauma. Cleaner fish used in biological control — particularly lumpfish — often die at high rates in salmon pens, raising additional welfare concerns. The fundamental driver of lice problems is the density of fish in open-net pens.
