The scientific case for fish sentience and pain has strengthened considerably over the past two decades. The burden of proof has shifted: it is no longer tenable to dismiss fish pain on the basis of absent neocortex alone, since the assumption that neocortical processing is necessary for pain experience is not established. Fish show all behavioral indicators of pain — avoidance learning, reduced activity after injury, analgesic responsiveness, and prioritization of pain avoidance over other motivations in trade-off studies. If fish feel pain — which the current evidence suggests is probable — the welfare implications are enormous given that billions of fish are caught and killed annually under conditions that would be considered inhumane for any recognized sentient animal.
