Carp are the most farmed fish globally by volume, but welfare standards in carp aquaculture remain poorly developed despite growing evidence for fish sentience and capacity for pain.
Carp welfare receives minimal attention compared to salmon, which are produced in smaller volumes but command more consumer concern. Yet carp are sentient animals farmed in the billions annually under conditions that regularly fall below acceptable welfare standards. Chronic stress from overcrowding suppresses immune function, increasing disease incidence that then requires antibiotic intervention. Improving water quality, reducing stocking density, and adopting humane slaughter methods would significantly improve outcomes for one of the world's most numerous farmed vertebrates.
