Entanglement in fishing gear is a leading cause of injury and death in humpback whales globally, causing prolonged suffering and requiring skilled rescue teams to safely free affected animals.
Entanglement causes profound and prolonged suffering. Ropes cutting into blubber and muscle over weeks or months create deep infected wounds that cause constant pain. The additional drag of attached gear prevents normal feeding and migration, causing starvation alongside physical injury. Animals that are successfully disentangled often show healing and return to normal behaviour, demonstrating that intervention genuinely reduces suffering. Prevention through fishing gear modification is a more scalable solution than rescue alone.
