Tilapia are among the most widely farmed fish globally, yet welfare considerations remain largely absent from their production systems. Improving conditions requires recognising their capacity for suffering.
Fish welfare science has advanced significantly — evidence now supports that tilapia and other teleost fish can experience pain and distress. Intensive tilapia farming creates chronic welfare challenges: overcrowding triggers aggression and injury, poor water quality suppresses immunity, and slaughter methods are often inhumane. A welfare-centred approach to tilapia production requires lower stocking densities, robust water management, environmental enrichment where feasible, and humane slaughter standards.
