Pigs are among the most cognitively capable farmed animals, yet are kept in systems that fundamentally deny their complex social and intellectual needs. Recognising their capabilities is central to meaningful welfare reform.
The gap between pig cognitive complexity and the conditions of commercial pig farming is stark and morally significant. Animals capable of self-awareness, episodic memory, and demonstrable depression-like states in poor conditions are routinely kept in bare concrete pens with minimal social interaction. The welfare science is not ambiguous. The challenge is translating scientific understanding into consumer behaviour, regulatory action, and industry practice — a transformation that requires sustained public engagement and advocacy.
