Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) is an age-related neurological condition analogous to dementia in humans, causing confusion, disorientation, and distress in older dogs — and grief in their owners.
CDS creates welfare challenges that differ from many other conditions because the dog loses the cognitive capacity to make sense of its environment. Familiar rooms become confusing, established routines lose meaning, and the dog may experience persistent low-level anxiety without understanding why. Owners often struggle to recognise the early signs, interpreting changed behaviour as stubbornness or personality shift rather than cognitive impairment. This delays interventions — both medical and environmental — that could reduce suffering. The welfare burden also falls significantly on owners, who grieve a dog that is still physically present but behaviourally absent. Proactive geriatric wellness assessments after age 8-9 can enable earlier detection and management.
