The science of pig enrichment has moved well beyond debating whether it matters — it clearly does — to the harder question of what works sustainably. Static enrichment addresses the regulatory requirement without delivering sustained benefit, because pigs are too cognitively active to remain interested indefinitely. Effective enrichment programmes rotate materials, introduce novel objects, and provide substrate where possible. The practical barriers are cost, labour, and the difficulty of substrate management in slatted floor systems. However, the welfare return on enrichment investment is substantial: lower tail biting rates reduce the need for tail docking, which is itself a painful procedure and a symptom of inadequate environments rather than a solution.
