Veal production uses male dairy calves otherwise killed at birth, but traditional white veal systems involve severe welfare restriction — while rose veal and higher-welfare alternatives demonstrate that veal production can be dramatically more humane.
Veal welfare is a story of regulatory improvement and the persistence of historical stigma. The white veal system that rightly earned condemnation — individual stalls, iron deprivation, complete behavioural restriction — has been legislated out of existence in the EU and UK. Rose veal, produced in group housing with appropriate diet and enrichment, is genuinely higher-welfare than many other meat production systems. The paradox is that consumer associations of "veal" with cruelty lead some welfare-conscious consumers to avoid rose veal while continuing to consume other meats from less welfare-positive systems. Redirecting the welfare case from "avoid veal" to "choose rose veal over alternatives" better serves both calves and welfare-conscious decision-making.
