Selective breeding for exaggerated physical traits has created serious, lifelong health problems in many popular dog breeds, dramatically shortening their lives and compromising welfare.
Many dogs live their entire lives managing chronic pain, breathing difficulties, skin infections, and orthopaedic problems that are direct consequences of deliberate breeding decisions. Brachycephalic dogs pant constantly, overheat easily, sleep poorly, and often cannot exercise normally. Dogs with extremely loose skin suffer from persistent fold dermatitis. Those with very heavy coats in warm climates are permanently thermally stressed. These are not fringe problems — they affect millions of dogs globally. Welfare reform requires changes to breed standards, veterinary guidance to buyers, and consumer willingness to choose healthier-conformed dogs even when they look less "extreme."
