Perching is a fundamental natural behaviour for laying hens, strongly motivated by the need to roost at height. Perch design and availability are critical welfare considerations in modern egg production.
The perching drive in hens is not a preference — it is a strongly motivated behaviour that causes measurable distress when thwarted. Hens that cannot roost at height show elevated stress indicators and persistent perch-seeking activity. However, simply providing perches does not automatically improve welfare: poorly designed perch systems are a primary cause of the keel bone fracture epidemic that affects the majority of cage-free hens globally. The injury is painful and often goes undetected because hens continue to lay even with fractured keels. Welfare-conscious perch design requires appropriate diameter, padding, correct placement to prevent collision injuries, and height graduation to allow inexperienced fliers to access elevated positions safely.
