Scientific evidence that fish experience pain has accumulated substantially over the past two decades, fundamentally changing how fish welfare should be considered in fishing, farming, and research.
The once-common assumption that fish "don't really feel pain" has been progressively dismantled by empirical research. Fish show pain responses that meet multiple criteria used to distinguish genuine pain from simple nociceptive reflex: they seek analgesics when distressed, they trade off resources against pain avoidance, and they show behavioural changes consistent with an aversive subjective experience. The absence of a neocortex does not rule out pain — it reflects a different evolutionary architecture that achieves comparable functional outcomes. This matters enormously for welfare: billions of fish are killed annually by methods that would be considered inhumane for any mammal, based on now-outdated assumptions about fish sentience. Regulatory frameworks are beginning to catch up, but consumer awareness and demand for humane treatment are critical drivers.
