Heat stress in cattle is both painful and physiologically damaging. Severely heat-stressed cattle show visible respiratory distress, cease eating, crowd around water sources, and experience elevating core body temperatures that can cause death in extreme cases. Even sub-lethal chronic heat stress impairs immune function, increases disease susceptibility, and causes reproductive failure — a form of suffering that is cumulative and prolonged across entire seasons. As climate change extends the duration and intensity of heat events, the proportion of the world's cattle experiencing welfare-compromising temperatures is increasing. Shade provision, forced air cooling, and misting systems demonstrably reduce heat stress indicators and are achievable in most systems, but their adoption remains inconsistent.
