A salmon with a severe sea lice infestation is experiencing ongoing skin trauma. The lice physically consume the fish's tissue, creating wounds that expose underlying muscle in extreme cases. The stress response to infestation is documented through elevated cortisol levels and immune suppression. Treatment also carries welfare costs: hydrogen peroxide baths cause visible distress and can cause mortality; chemical bath treatments involve crowding, handling, and exposure to compounds that cause physiological stress. The ecological damage caused by sea lice spreading from farms to wild salmon adds a conservation dimension. Closed-containment aquaculture, which eliminates environmental exchange and sea lice exposure, represents the most welfare-positive direction for the industry, albeit at higher capital cost.
