Feline cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) is a progressive neurodegenerative condition analogous to Alzheimer's disease in humans, affecting a significant proportion of older cats.
A cat with cognitive dysfunction syndrome is experiencing a form of suffering that is primarily psychological: confusion about familiar environments, disrupted relationships with routines and family members, and anxiety from the disorientation that the condition causes. Unlike physical pain which can often be treated directly, cognitive decline involves welfare challenges that require ongoing adaptation of the environment and management to support quality of life. Diagnosis is the critical first step that too many owners miss — assuming that an older cat that is confused, vocalising at night, or eliminating inappropriately is simply "being difficult." Veterinary assessment and appropriate support, including structured routines, environmental simplification, and where appropriate medication, can significantly improve quality of life for affected cats.
