Dairy cows are typically culled after 2-4 lactations — a small fraction of their potential lifespan — primarily due to metabolic diseases and reproductive failure linked to intensive production.
A dairy cow culled at age five for "reproductive failure" or chronic mastitis has spent most of her short life managing the physiological consequences of producing milk at rates far exceeding what her body evolved to handle. Negative energy balance causes the mobilisation of body fat reserves, producing ketones that affect liver function and immune competence. Compromised immunity leads to mastitis. Metabolic drain depletes bone and muscle. Reproductive suppression follows. Each of these is both a welfare problem in itself and a step toward early culling. The system is self-reinforcing: breeds selected for maximum production are inherently more vulnerable to the welfare-compromising conditions of intensive dairy. Longer-lived cows on farms prioritising metabolic health over maximum yield demonstrate that longevity and welfare are aligned.
