Halibut welfare in aquaculture combines the universal fish welfare challenges of high-density culture with species-specific vulnerabilities. Their unique flatfish morphology means they spend time resting on tank floors — surfaces that must be appropriately textured to avoid abrasion of their ventral skin. Juvenile halibut are particularly delicate during the eye-migration metamorphosis period; environmental stress during this phase causes development abnormalities and high mortality. The welfare literature on halibut is sparse compared to salmonid species, reflecting lower production volume rather than lower welfare significance. As halibut aquaculture expands in response to wild stock depletion, welfare standards must be developed proactively rather than reactively.
