Octopuses are among the most cognitively sophisticated invertebrates known to science. Growing evidence of their intelligence and sentience raises important welfare questions — especially as octopus farming is being developed.
The cognitive complexity of octopuses raises serious ethical questions about their treatment in captivity and in fisheries. Octopuses caught by fishing show stress responses; trawl capture can cause injury and asphyxiation. Proposed octopus farms face a fundamental challenge: these animals are solitary, have complex spatial needs, and require cognitive stimulation — conditions nearly impossible to provide at commercial scale. Several scientists and organizations have called for a moratorium on octopus farming pending welfare research. The evidence of octopus sentience is sufficient to warrant precautionary protection.
