Zoos house millions of animals and contribute to conservation of endangered species, but the welfare of individual animals varies enormously. Evaluating zoo welfare requires nuanced assessment beyond simple pro- or anti-zoo positions.
Zoo welfare is highly variable. Accredited institutions with large, naturalistic enclosures and skilled enrichment programs can provide reasonable welfare for many species. However, the welfare needs of large-ranging animals like elephants, polar bears, and great apes are nearly impossible to meet in captivity. Stereotypic behavior remains common even in well-funded zoos. Conservation benefits are real but unevenly distributed — few zoo animals are in genuine breeding programs for wild release. Evaluating individual zoo welfare requires looking at stereotypic behavior rates, social housing, enrichment provision, and evidence of positive affective states.
