Deforestation causes immense individual orangutan suffering beyond population-level impacts. Animals trapped in burning forest fragments die from smoke inhalation, burns, and starvation. Those who escape into plantations face persecution — often killed by machete or shooting. Mothers protecting their infants are targeted, and surviving orphaned infants experience severe psychological trauma. Orangutan sanctuaries provide critical care for orphans but cannot address the scale of habitat destruction. Reducing palm oil consumption and supporting forest protection are the most direct ways consumers can reduce this suffering.
