Escaped farmed salmon face a welfare crisis of maladaptation. Domestication for aquaculture has selectively bred fish for rapid growth, tolerance of crowding, and reduced stress response — traits that are maladaptive in wild environments. Escaped salmon lack the predator avoidance behaviors of their wild counterparts, making them vulnerable to birds, seals, and larger fish. Their abnormal boldness and reduced stress response make them easy prey. Farm-adapted swimming and feeding behaviors are poorly suited to navigating fast-moving river systems. Escaped salmon attempting to spawn in rivers face exhaustion and injury from a journey they are physiologically less equipped to complete.
