Rainbow trout welfare in intensive aquaculture reflects the same fundamental tension present in salmon farming: the species is naturally territorial and aggressive, and high-density rearing creates conditions where this aggression causes chronic harm. Dominant fish monopolize food and oxygen, while subordinate fish develop persistent stress responses — elevated cortisol, suppressed immune function, and behavioral submission. Fin erosion from aggression and abrasion against cage structures is a visible welfare indicator. Slaughter welfare is particularly important for trout: asphyxiation in air causes a slow death involving prolonged distress, while CO2 immersion is aversive before unconsciousness. Electrical stunning followed by gill-cutting is rapid and welfare-positive but requires equipment investment that smaller producers resist. The scientific evidence that trout experience pain makes inadequate stunning an ethical problem, not merely a production quality issue.
