Eye infections, nasal discharge, and feather degradation in waterless systems are direct welfare consequences of this deprivation. Foie gras production adds acute suffering through forced overfeeding — birds resist the gavage process and develop pathological liver enlargement that impairs normal function. The welfare case against intensive duck farming without water access, and against foie gras production in particular, is among the strongest available for any farmed species.
