Dehorning cattle causes significant acute and chronic pain yet remains routine. Polled (naturally hornless) genetics offer a path to eliminating the practice entirely.
Dehorning causes acute pain comparable in intensity to other major veterinary procedures. Without analgesia, calves show elevated cortisol, reduced feeding, abnormal posture, and pain behaviours lasting 6–12 hours or more. Hot-iron dehorning causes thermal injury to surrounding tissue; caustic paste can spread if applied incorrectly, causing burns to other body areas. The existence of polled genetics makes dehorning a potentially eliminable procedure rather than a permanent welfare compromise — if industry and breeding organisations commit to the transition. The welfare case for accelerating adoption of polled genetics is compelling: it eliminates both the procedure and its associated pain, permanently and at scale.
