Poultry slaughter welfare depends critically on the reliability of stunning — if birds regain consciousness between stunning and death, they experience the slaughter process. Current water bath systems have well-documented failure rates that translate to millions of birds annually experiencing conscious slaughter. The existence of superior alternatives (inert gas CAS systems) that eliminate stunning failure makes continued reliance on suboptimal water bath systems an ethically questionable choice. The higher capital cost of CAS is the primary barrier, but regulatory requirements and consumer pressure can accelerate uptake. Religious slaughter exemptions raise additional welfare questions; post-cut stunning and continuous monitoring are improvements that can be implemented within religious slaughter frameworks.
