Anthropogenic noise is one of the most pervasive threats to cetacean welfare, disrupting communication, navigation, foraging, and causing physical injury in extreme cases.
For cetaceans, whose entire sensory world is acoustic, noise pollution is not a background inconvenience but a fundamental disruption to their ability to function. Chronic masking of communication signals effectively deafens whales to social interactions happening metres away. Prey detection by echolocating odontocetes is impaired in high-noise environments, reducing foraging efficiency. The acute welfare events of sonar-related strandings — where beaked whales die from haemorrhage and embolism related to panic ascent — represent extreme cases of noise-induced injury. Less visible but more pervasive are the chronic welfare costs: elevated stress hormones in shipping corridors, reduced reproductive success in noise-exposed populations, and disrupted mother-calf communication during critical bonding periods.
