Humpback whale populations have recovered dramatically from commercial whaling, but ship strikes, entanglement, and climate-driven prey shifts continue to cause significant individual welfare harm.
Individual humpback whales that survive entanglement may carry gear for months or years, with wire cutting progressively deeper into tissue. The resulting wounds become infected; animals lose body condition from impaired swimming efficiency; and some slowly die over extended periods. Ship strikes cause acute traumatic injury — internal haemorrhage, fractured vertebrae, and propeller lacerations — with deaths that may not be instantaneous. Climate-driven nutritional stress is less visible but no less real: a whale arriving at breeding grounds with insufficient fat reserves has compromised reproductive success and reduced immune function. The welfare of individual whales recovering populations remains precarious despite population-level success.
