Rainbow trout aquaculture is one of the better-studied fish welfare contexts, and emerging research on positive welfare indicators is beginning to transform how "good trout welfare" is understood and measured.
Trout welfare science has advanced to the point where "good welfare" can no longer be defined simply as the absence of disease and injury. Research using cognitive bias tests and behavioral observation reveals that trout in high-quality environments express qualitatively different affective states — more exploratory, more positively biased in ambiguous situations — than trout in suboptimal conditions that nonetheless meet basic survival standards. This shift from negative-to-positive welfare framing is significant for the aquaculture industry, because it implies that optimal welfare requires active environmental design rather than merely avoiding obvious harms. Farmers who provide appropriate enrichment, flow dynamics, and stocking densities are not just being kind — they are meeting a demonstrated biological need.
