Dairy goat welfare sits in a regulatory and public awareness gap. Because goat milk is often marketed as a natural, small-scale, or artisan product, consumers may assume higher welfare standards than actually exist. In reality, intensive dairy goat production shares many of the welfare problems of dairy cattle operations — routine painful procedures without adequate pain relief, separation of mothers and kids, disposal of male kids, and housing that prevents natural behavior — while being subject to less public scrutiny and weaker regulatory standards. The growing market for goat dairy products presents both a challenge and an opportunity: as the industry scales, there is a window to establish meaningful welfare standards before intensive practices become fully entrenched.
