Heat stress is one of the most significant and growing welfare threats to cattle globally, causing suffering, reduced productivity, and increased mortality as temperatures rise with climate change.
Heat stress in cattle causes genuine suffering — the behavioral signs of distress are clear and the physiological consequences are serious, including reduced immune function, pregnancy loss, and in extreme cases heat stroke and death. Unlike some welfare problems that require complex behavioral assessment to identify, heat stress is visible and measurable through relatively simple monitoring tools. The welfare solutions are also largely known: shade access, sprinkler systems, altered feeding times, and breed selection for heat tolerance. What prevents widespread adoption is primarily economic — the upfront costs of infrastructure — rather than technological uncertainty. Climate change is transforming heat stress from a seasonal challenge into a near-constant welfare pressure in increasingly large parts of the world, making investment in heat mitigation an urgent welfare priority.
