Welfare Considerations

Farmed bile bears are confined in metal crush cages so small they cannot stand or turn, with open wounds from crude bile extraction catheters — a welfare situation described as among the worst inflicted on any animal. Wild bears displaced into human-dominated landscapes face persecution. Climate change is reducing polar bear hunting seasons, causing starvation. The most tractable welfare interventions differ by species and region: eliminating bile farming through consumer demand reduction and political pressure; reducing conflict through coexistence programmes; and protecting sea ice through climate policy.
