Pig Enrichment Science: What Works and Why

Research into pig enrichment has moved from intuition to evidence. Understanding which enrichment types are most effective and why helps farmers invest in interventions that genuinely improve pig welfare.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Pig enrichment science has generated clear practical guidance that is not yet uniformly reflected in farming practice. Pigs prefer enrichment that is organic (has smell and texture), destructible (can be manipulated and changed), and novel (changes regularly). Chains and rubber tubes — the most common commercial enrichments — fail on all three criteria and produce minimal welfare benefit despite technical regulatory compliance. Straw, the most welfare-effective enrichment, is resisted in slatted floor systems because it blocks slurry drains. This creates a structural tension between housing design and enrichment welfare. The most impactful policy and industry focus would be mandating deep-litter or straw systems that make genuinely effective enrichment structurally compatible with farm management.
