Crowding stress in aquaculture operates through multiple pathways simultaneously: direct competition for space and resources, degraded water quality from excess waste, impaired immune function from chronic stress hormones, and disruption of normal social behaviour. The cumulative welfare effect of persistent crowding is severe and pervasive. Because reducing stocking density directly reduces production volume, there is strong economic pressure to maintain high densities. The welfare case for lower stocking densities must therefore be made through certification premiums, regulatory requirements, and demonstration that lower-density systems can be economically viable. Research establishing species-specific welfare thresholds provides the scientific foundation for evidence-based density regulations that protect fish welfare without requiring impossible economics.
