Urban fox welfare involves both the chronic challenges of city living — traffic, disease, human conflict — and the acute suffering of mange, an intensely pruritic condition that causes hair loss, weight loss, and eventually death without treatment. Mange can be treated with medicated bait dropped near affected foxes, and several UK organisations provide this service. The welfare response to most urban fox "problems" is coexistence education — securing food waste, using appropriate deterrents — rather than culling, which is both ineffective and causes welfare harm to the animals killed. Foxes that appear sick or injured should be reported to wildlife rescue organisations rather than approached or handled by members of the public.
