Sea lice infestation is a major welfare and production problem in Atlantic salmon farming. The treatments used to control lice have their own welfare costs, creating difficult trade-offs for producers.
Salmon delousing represents a welfare dilemma where the disease itself causes welfare harm, and the treatments used to address it also cause welfare harm. The welfare calculus requires comparing chronic lice-related suffering against acute treatment stress, using the intervention only when the former clearly outweighs the latter. Thermal delousing, when improperly calibrated, causes eye cataracts and permanent welfare damage; chemical treatments cause acute respiratory distress; mechanical methods cause scale loss and injury. Developing treatment protocols that minimise harm while achieving adequate parasite control is an active area of aquaculture welfare research. The most welfare-positive long-term trajectory is preventing infestation through site fallowing, lower density, and genetic resistance — making treatment an exception rather than routine.
