The evidence on captive elephant outcomes is sobering: zoo elephants live significantly shorter lives than wild conspecifics, suffer from chronic foot and joint disease at high rates, and display stereotypic swaying and head-bobbing at frequencies reflecting chronic stress. Improvements are possible and have been achieved: facilities that provide large, complex, substrate-varied spaces with appropriate social groups and increased foraging activity show better welfare outcomes. The critical question — whether any zoo can meet elephant welfare needs adequately — remains genuinely contested among welfare scientists. What is clear is that incremental improvement in existing facilities is beneficial, and that transfers to accredited sanctuaries with large-range access are appropriate for elephants in facilities that cannot meet science-based welfare standards.
