Dairy cows produce milk under physiological and management conditions that have significant welfare implications. Understanding the links between productivity, health, and welfare in dairy systems helps identify interventions that benefit both cows and farmers.
Dairy cow welfare is characterised by high disease burdens that are simultaneously welfare failures and economic losses, making welfare improvement and productivity improvement often aligned goals. Mastitis and lameness are the two most significant welfare problems and both respond to management changes: clean dry housing, regular foot trimming, effective mastitis monitoring, and pasture access all reduce disease incidence. The welfare-productivity alignment breaks down in other areas: high milk yields create metabolic stress and reproductive failure; early calf separation is distressing but economically convenient; and short productive lifespans reduce the lifetime welfare cost calculation from the industry's perspective. Pasture access provides meaningful welfare benefits through exercise, natural behaviour expression, and reduced disease; its restriction in favour of higher-yield indoor systems represents a genuine welfare trade-off that regulations and consumer preferences increasingly address.
