Bats face twin welfare crises in the Northern Hemisphere: white-nose syndrome is killing millions of hibernating bats, while roost disturbance and habitat loss threaten populations across their range. Understanding these threats helps identify effective interventions.
White-nose syndrome causes death through a slow, agonising process: infected bats rouse repeatedly from hibernation, burning their fat reserves, becoming dehydrated, and starving before spring insect emergence. Individual animals experience progressively worsening physiological distress over weeks. Roost disturbance adds acute welfare harms: pups dropped from roosting females often cannot survive without maternal warmth and milk; adults in disturbed colonies experience chronic stress that impairs reproduction. Wind turbine mortality, while less than bird mortality in absolute numbers, is significant for long-lived bat species with very slow reproduction (one pup per year in most species). Probiotic treatments that inhibit Pseudogymnoascus destructans growth show promise in reducing WNS mortality and represent a welfare-positive conservation intervention.
