Disease management in aquaculture is inseparable from fish welfare. Infectious disease causes pain through tissue damage, impairs swimming and feeding ability, and when severe causes death through multiple organ failure. The welfare dimension of disease extends to treatment as well: chemical bath treatments for sea lice involve handling, confinement, and exposure to substances that cause additional stress; mechanical delousing (thermal and pressure-based methods) causes injury and mortality in a proportion of treated fish. The welfare-optimal disease management strategy minimises both disease burden and treatment harm — achieved primarily through prevention (vaccination, biosecurity, genetics for disease resistance) rather than reactive treatment. The scale of disease events in aquaculture — a single outbreak can kill millions of fish — makes effective prevention not just an economic priority but a welfare imperative of enormous magnitude.
