Sea lice are ectoparasitic copepods that cause the most significant welfare and economic challenge in Atlantic salmon farming. Understanding their impact on fish welfare and the welfare trade-offs of different treatment approaches is essential for improving outcomes.
Sea lice represent a welfare problem with no current perfect solution: the lice themselves cause significant welfare harm through tissue damage and physiological stress, but all currently available treatments also impose welfare costs of their own. Chemical bath treatments cause acute stress from confinement, crowding into well boats, and chemical exposure. Thermal and pressure delousing methods kill lice effectively but injure treated fish at rates of 1-3% per treatment, sometimes more. Biological control using wrasse and lumpfish as cleaner fish introduces a second species whose own welfare must be managed, and mortality rates in cleaner fish on salmon farms are often very high. The welfare imperative is therefore to treat when lice loads exceed welfare-relevant thresholds, using the least harmful effective treatment available, while investing heavily in prevention through improved genetics, management, and biosecurity that reduces the frequency and severity of infestation events.
