Genetic diversity in livestock is directly connected to welfare: breeds selected for extreme productivity trade health against yield in ways that create systematic welfare problems across entire production populations. Broilers bred to grow from hatch to slaughter weight in 35 days suffer locomotion problems, heart failure, and metabolic disease at rates that are a direct consequence of their genetic profile. High-yielding dairy cows suffer elevated rates of metabolic disease, mastitis, and reproductive problems. Selecting for extreme single traits creates genetic vulnerability to disease and reduces the adaptability that supports welfare across varied environmental conditions. Maintaining heritage breeds, supporting breed diversity programmes, and developing commercial genetics with welfare as an explicit selection criterion are all important interventions for improving livestock welfare at the population level.
