Feedlot welfare presents a complex picture where management quality varies enormously between operations and determines welfare outcomes as much as system design. The key welfare challenges are well-characterised: dietary transition acidosis during the first weeks of feedlot entry; heat stress during summer months in operations lacking shade; mud-related lameness and hygiene problems during wet seasons; and respiratory disease that spreads rapidly in concentrated populations. Welfare-positive management addresses each: gradual dietary transition reduces acidosis risk; shade structures and water misters demonstrably reduce heat stress indicators; feedlot surface management prevents severe mud accumulation; and systematic health monitoring with rapid treatment reduces BRD severity. The welfare question of extended confinement without access to pasture or significant space for movement is more fundamental and less easily addressed within the feedlot model itself.
